Dave Whitlock was the first contemporary American fly tyer to popularize nymph patterns using squirrel hair. He first started tying his famous red fox squirrel hair nymph in the 1960’s. By borrowing many of Whitlock’s teachings, we have created our own squirrel hair pattern to mimic both a dragonfly larva and a small baitfish, both of which are commonly found in the creeks of the Pineywoods. The San Jac Squirrel is tied with homemade dubbing mixture of bonafide East Texas squirrel hair, combined with UV dubbing. This combination imparts the mystical powers of the bushy-tailed tree rat, but also gives this fly a buggy silhouette. When stripped, swung, or dead drifted, this fly attracts the attention of many panfish, but also entices spotted bass. Best when fished on lightweight gear, such as 2-weights to 3-weights. This fly has been featured on Panfish on the Fly (www.panfishonthefly.com).
